Description
Two Day CPD Course | Sat 21 – Sun 22 November 2026 | Gold Coast
This course provides an evidence-informed, clinically grounded exploration of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) for osteopaths and manual practitioners managing complex autonomic presentations. Participants will review the current gold-standard definitions, diagnostic criteria, and management approaches, including contemporary non-pharmacological and pharmacological strategies used in multidisciplinary care.
The course then examines current pathophysiological models of POTS, including hypovolemic, neuropathic, and hyperadrenergic phenotypes, alongside common comorbidities such as chronic fatigue syndromes, hypermobility, and post-viral dysautonomia.
Building on this foundation, the program introduces key osteopathic anatomical and physiological considerations, with emphasis on venous return, preload dynamics, respiratory mechanics, and autonomic regulation. Drawing on extensive clinical experience, participants will be guided through osteopathic assessment frameworks and treatment applications that have been found in practice to assist symptom burden and functional capacity.
The content is explicitly designed for post-registration osteopaths managing patients with complex, chronic, and multi-system conditions such as dysautonomia, POTS, post- viral syndromes, fatigue disorders, and hypermobility. It supports advanced clinical reasoning beyond entry-level competencies.
CPD Domains Addressed
- Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Updates participants on current, evidence-based definitions, diagnostic criteria, and gold-standard management of POTS
Advances post-graduate understanding of autonomic, cardiovascular, respiratory, and venous physiology relevant to osteopathic care - Patient Safety and Quality of Care
Emphasises safe assessment, identification of red flags, scope of practice, and appropriate referral pathways
Positions osteopathic management as complementary to medical and allied health care - Reflective Practice and Professional Judgement
Encourages critical appraisal of emerging hypotheses Supports reflective integration of new knowledge into clinical decision-making - Collaboration and Ethical Practice
Aligns osteopathic treatment planning with multidisciplinary care models
Participant Assessment
Participant learning will be informally assessed throughout the course via facilitator’s observation during supervised practical sessions. Assessment will focus on participants’ ability to:
- Demonstrate appropriate application of course concepts to osteopathic assessment and treatment
- Apply techniques safely and within scope of practice
